VIsualizing Social Constructions – Michael Kates

This is a very interesting visual psychographic analysis undertaken by University of Pennsylvania graduate students. Using 75,000 volunteers, the researchers had access to the content of each person’s status updates. Using the aggregated updates, they were able to accurately predict certain characteristics about each volunteer, like their age, gender and personality traits. I think the more interesting part of the study was that the researchers then made word clouds around certain overarching characteristics. For example, male and female, different age ranges and introverted and extraverted. It is almost sad to see how predictable the results are. Agencies can use this kind of data and create advertisements that appeal to these massive target markets.
