Brad Bowen – Product Placement – ‘Alienating’ Products in E.T.

Posted: October 7, 2013 in Uncategorized

Most of us have seen the film E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, but what we often miss at first view of the film is the seemingly numerous product placements that are present – most notably ‘Reeses Pieces’. After viewing the film ‘Art and Copy’ and the relevance of product reference from the film, I felt as if this would article and video link would be appropriate to share on the course blog. In the scene shown in the link, we see that the Hershey’s product Reeses Pieces is used to captivate and guide E.T. into being captured, as if he was enticed by Reeses Pieces so much that he couldn’t resist. This is a very interactive form of product placement where we see the character actually USE the product as a opposed to the product making a minor appearance in the film.
