Laura Gilbertson – Positive Advertising?

Last week in class we discussed advertising and watched the documentary outlining advertisings positive qualities, as it could be considered an art form, or at least was sometimes artistic in nature. This lead to me thinking of the motive of advertising, of course it is to sell a product, but does that mean it is solely bad in nature? Advertising campaigns such as the Dawn Wildlife and the Dove Real Beauty Sketches both speak for something more than the product, Dawn for protecting the environment, and Dove for one’s natural beauty. My question is are ads inherently bad due to their manipulation of an audience in order to sell a product, or by promoting a positive message are they benefiting and doing good for society?
