Sean McAlary – The Culture Industry In Relation to Mass Media

Posted: October 7, 2013 in Uncategorized

Last week in lecture we discussed the Culture Industry. We watched a video about how consumer culture is controlled by the media, products, brands, and how we live in a society controlled by the media. While on Facebook this week I found an interesting comic entitled “We Are Adults, Right?”. The comic showed how although we don’t realize it, media and networking sites such as facebook and twitter control us.  It is like a drug to us; having to be connected 24/7 to the social world.

I kind of saw relations to the culture industry. Adorno and Horkheimer suggest that culture today is much like a factory producing standardized goods, through films, radio, magazines, and other media. They manipulate society into buying into buying into their products, and eventually NEEDING them. This comic shows how we’ve bought into digital media such as smartphones, use applications such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram just as “a good way to stay connected”, when in reality we’ve been manipulated into living on these sites to increase the popularity of the people (industries) running them.
