Justifying Taste: Them Basic B**tches Wear That S**T so I don’t Even Bother – Joel Seetahal

In Pierre Bourdieu’s article he talk’s about aesthetic taste, meaning how we discover things we find pleasing such as a certain style of clothes or music (for example) through a rejection of of other styles. So rather than saying “I like hip hop just because it appeals to me”, it’s actually like “I like hip hop because I heard rock, jazz, country, etc. and did not like them”. I thought it was interesting how such a simple thing which seems really harmless could actually be really negative in the sense that it divides groups of people, these niches or cliques of styles created by the culture industry. You can justify or assert your own aesthetic taste without offending a group of people or other individuals, if you push forth your favouritism for one thing, it leads to hatred for the other and sometimes its towards the people who have that aesthetic taste. One song that I think demonstrates this, is the song Gucci Gucci by Kreayshawn, Im not a huge fan of this song, but I thought it was relevant, the way she attacks a group of people with the aesthetic taste for a certain style of clothing, calling them “basic bitches”.
