Holly Thornton- Betty Friedan and 1960’s advertising

Posted: November 11, 2013 in Uncategorized

This week one of the readings, “The Sexual Sell” was about the ways in which the media portrays women, and suggests that their role is in the house. Author Betty Friedan says that advertising is ultimately a conspiracy that turns women into ‘housewives’ instead of equal human beings. Friedan says that women are portrayed as ignorant, and our ultimately slaves to the home, and to their husbands. This clip I have included is a commercial from the 1960’s, for Roto-Rooter Plumbing and Draining Services. This clip embodies exactly what Friedan is talking about, as the women in the ad is portrayed as a ‘clueless housewife’, who depends on her husband to make the real decisions.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC6ErD7KRyc
