Brianna Hill – Quiz 4: Culture Jamming

Since the blog already has tons of examples of Lasn’s culture jamming, I thought it would be interesting to show the kind of people who create and fully support culture jamming. Lasn defines a culture jammer as someone who’s, “chief aim is to challenge the prevailing ethic in a way that is so primal and heartfelt it could only be true”. I immediately thought of the group within our era of that is becoming more and more dominant in defying the established order, that of hipsters. Before them there were the “punks, Hippies, Yippies, Beats, Anarchists, Dadists, Surrealists, Automatistes, Fluxists” (415). Hipsters relate to culture jamming because they believe its better and cooler to be anti-consumers therefore making them icons of simplicity through spontaneity and authenticity (422). This group further supports Vaneigem’s point of society’s consumer capitalism quickly approaching saturation with more people slowly turning away from it. The revolution will begin if everyone follows hipsters’ spontaneous suit of the “demarketing” techniques the article mentions.
