Friends and Gendering Toys- Hilary M

I thought of this clip from Friends during lecture this week. Ross is so concerned that his son picked out a barbie at the store he tries to force the action figure on him to play with instead. This is an example of how society and advertising has conditioned us to think that it’s not right for boys to play with a toy that is so strongly marketing to girls. Children are taught strict gender norms from such a young age through advertisements, and are often shamed or teased if they do not follow suit.

This is a great clip showing the emphasis on gender and toys. I remember watching an episode of 20/20 ‘What would you do’ which set up hidden cameras and put people in a situation where they saw a child being bullied by his father for not picking out manly toys. In most cases people interrupted the adult and told him to let his child play with whatever toy he wanted to. I do not think that there should be gender associations with toys at all. I would like to see a change in the corporations shifting from gendered toys, to just toys…. but I highly doubt that this will occur. Also what could we do to push corporations to cease the use of gendering toys to children.
