Jessica Chen – iPhone 5S

I agree with what James Twitchell wrote in, “Two Cheers for Materialism”, that “things” are really important to us, as we human beings love “things”. In the reading, he pointed out that, ”We live through things. We create ourselves through things. And we change ourselves by changing our things.” (Twitchell 282). Just take electronic devices for example. Nowadays, people basically live with their thumbs on their smartphones. We would find it very difficult to live without our smartphones, as it has become an essential element of our daily life. People usually identify a person by what “things” the person has. Many electronic products in America have become so popular that people all over the world know about them, and desperately want one. They will do what ever it takes to get their hands on it. Take the new Apple iPhone 5S release for example. Not only did people all around the world line up for days just to be one of the first people to get their hands on one, but the new colour release set the online market on fire. It was reported that at the beginning of the release, the Champagne Gold iPhone 5S was sold for $10,100 on eBay, even though it is only $549 on the Apple website. Even though I myself did not line up at the stores just to be one of the first to get the smartphone, but I did ultimately in the end follow the bandwagon and get the new iPhone 5S, even though I already had the iPhone 4S. The American culture is well on its way to becoming the world culture.
