Culture Theory – Jordan Christensen

In contemporary media, magazines are an example of the culture industry theory. There are many different types of magazines including fitness, fashion and entertainment, and each of these always displays a slender, happy and attractive looking person on the cover. It is almost always a model or actor that society looks up too. In every cover photo, the models or actors look similar in appearance, and it is an image that the Western world accepts, creating a look that majority of people want. All the cover models look happy and as if they are living an amazing life. This creates the assumption that appearance is associated with success and happiness. Superficial looks have become a dominant part of today’s society. Magazines sell a certain look and way of life in exchange for profit. This is relevant to the cultural theory because it turns culture into a commodity.
