The Trap of the Culture Industry – Andrew T

Whether we like it or not, we all, in some way, buy into what is known as the culture industry. You may think you are choosing different objects or life choices that express your individuality, but in reality, we are all buying into the corporate capitalist society that we live in. This isn’t a mistake, but rather a subtle and effective strategy taken by the capitalists of society. By giving a “variety” of products, people think they are getting what they desire and expressing individuality. However, at the end of they day we are just buying into the system that has been laid out for us. In today’s world, everything is mass produced to maximize profits and therefore, appreciating goods for what they are and for their exclusivity is a romantic notion. Just because you choose to buy an orange iPhone doesn’t make you unique or individual.
