Shelley Zimner- Veblen’s Theory

Posted: February 13, 2014 in Uncategorized

I found Veblen’s reading to be a bit dense and confusing. He threw around a lot of terminology that did not quite make sense but with some googling his ideas appeared to be quite simple. He  introduced the idea of consuming for status, not needs, a concept that is all too familiar for most of us. I found this video that not only explains a bit on this idea of ‘conspicuous consumption’ but also shows some clips of how crazy consumers can get over their much ‘needed’ commodities. (the video gets good around 3:15).
