Beauty Pressure – Courtney Bruce

Posted: March 2, 2014 in Uncategorized

Growing up as a female from a young age you learn your “role” in society.  How to act, dress and look.  After reading this week’s chapters I immediately thought of this commercial that dove uses to express their self-esteem campaign.  As mentioned in the Bordo chapter that young girls are learning how to control their weight.  The problem is the advertisements these young girls are looking at are just images of photo-shopped women but to them this is not the case.  They look at these images and want to look like them and society encourages it.  There are so many weight loss products and programs that these young girls are constantly seeing giving them the impression that they need to lose weight.  This commercial I believe is a good example of this idea that society has such an influence on people but especially young girls.

To be the devil’s advocate although this Dove Real Beauty campaign is very inspiring and not something you see in more beauty products, the company Unilever owns Dove and many other brands that promote the complete opposite. If you look at the Axe advertisements they are polar opposite of this Dove campaign. We need to be critical of both these advertisements and see how they are made by the same company making them counter react. I think the Dove commercial is awesome and we should support it but should understand that both need to be changed for there is be a different in the advertisement industry.

I think that this commercial is a step in the right direction for young girls. because it is true so many young girls are seeing images of girls who have been Photoshoped to look at certain way and it is not fair to be showing young impressionable girls images that are not attainable and that is should not be something they should be striving for. Take for example a recent advertisement that came from Target where they did a horrible photo-shopping job on a young girl and they got caught. Why do they need to be photoshopping children, that is not the right message we should be sending out. There is already s much pressure on women to look a certain way, we should not be putting this pressure on young girls. Young children should not even be concerned about there weight they need to be happy and carefree. I have attached the image of the target campaign below
