Jordan Buchbinder- “New Politics of Consumption”- The Good Consumer

Posted: March 26, 2014 in Uncategorized

This video highlights a lot of the things mentioned in Schor’s chapter “Towards a New Politics of Consumption”.
The main idea that is suppose to unite Americans is the very thing that divides them, which is consumerism.
Both the video and the chapter mention how people are always buying things to fit in and not stand out, to be apart
of pop culture and society. When people are not buying things, they are working long hours in order to acquire more goods.
People are constantly concerned with materialism, it is the thing that is suppose to bring happiness and equality.
But as mentioned in Elgin’s reading “Voluntary Simplicity and the New Global Challenge” people should be more concerned with
surrounding themselves with nature, people, culture and just enjoying things for what they are, not what they will bring or how they are suppose to make one feel.
